Following a series of flattering recognitions by some of the world’s leading guides, Istria has appeared on a list of the top 10 summer destinations for summer 2011 selected by National Geographic Traveler, one of the few National Geographic magazines to be released in many countries around the world.
The text on Istria points out that more than 40 Blue flags fly proudly along its 333 miles long coastline, guaranteeing top quality sea cleanliness and declaring that beaches are being managed in accordance with the principles of environmental protection. Editors direct their readers both to the west and to the south of the Istrian peninsula where crystal blue bays hide with their sand and pebble beaches surrounded by the scent of fresh pine trees.
The 49 kilometre long Medulin Riviera, with its nearby medieval hill top towns and old ruins worthy of exploring are also given special mention.
In this selection too, Cape Kamenjak has been singled out as a special attraction – with its natural reserve on the edge of the world, with cliff tops of up to 20 metres high, hidden coves and natural rocky recesses, just great for sunbathing. However, swimmers should pay attention to the stronger sea currents here.
The National Geographic recommends that its travellers visit Pula, home to the excellently preserved amphitheatre, which dates back to the Roman period, a place where a number of summer concerts and events take place, while underlining the Film Festival in July.
In this selection, Istria was ranked among exotic and unusual destinations in Honduras, Canada, the United States, Portugal and other countries that, according to National Geographic Traveler's editor, offer a new and different experience thus enabling its readers to make the right choice for their next summer holiday.
